Polychromatic Beauty
Exhibition Design
When it comes to classical statues and sarcophagi, most museums and art history textbooks are mainly white, which has an impact on the way we view the ancient world. In fact, the Romans did not define people as “whites”, but race across the Mediterranean. After the Renaissance, artists be- gan to dabble in mathematics and anatomy, using classi- cal sculpture as a means to solve the problem of replicable beauty through proportions. As early as the 18th century, archaeologists found traces of color in ancient statues, and this insight was not published until a long time later. Around 1980, people began to use scientific methods to explore and restore the colors of ancient sculptures.
This project is locating in RISD Museum and showing the sculpture from different ancient period, all of them are colored and RISD Museum are finding the way to see these color.
So I want to show people's interpretation of sculptures in different eras in this exhibition, and encourage people to appreciate the beauty of different colors. From 2003 to 2015, after the first exhibition of Glyptothek in Munich, the "Colors of the Gods" exhibition traveled all over the world. In the RISD Museum, I want to incorporate multi-color sculptures into more modern designs in the exhibition, so that the audience can think about the beauty of sculptures in different periods. In the interior design, visitors have a sense of classical sculpture as a fashion show model, and beautiful figures from different eras are combined in this space-time indoor space, giving the audience a rich and exquisite picture.
Fun Home
Set Design
One of the most groundbreaking productions ever to hit Broadway, Fun Home is the winner of five 2015 Tony Awards including Best Musical. It introduces us to Alison at three different ages, revealing memories of her uniquely dysfunctional family – her mother, brothers and volatile, brilliant, enigmatic father – that connect with her in surprising new ways. This intimate and emotional theatrical experience is performed entirely in the round, bringing audiences closer to Alison’s story than ever before. A refreshingly honest musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes, Fun Home is “a blazingly original heartbreaker and a nonstop treasure of invention.
Fairview
Set Design
In the first act, the audience observes the actors, and the stage appears normal, similar to the text.
In the second act, there is a large mirror set at a high angle, and the black actors are en- closed in a translucent plastic box, white actors are outside of the box and express their comments. The audience, placed in a sort of hierarchy, is forced to look down at the actors through the mirror, while the actors perform the pantomime in unex- pected ways, possibly from the ground. My purpose is that this way of ‘watching’ act two, heightens a sense of uneasiness, of both the watcher and the watched.
In the third act, the au- dience is invited to go onto the stage, the actors stand up and break the fourth wall. I propose that these choices support and symbolize the chaos of race in American society and potential- ly the struggle of black people under the white gaze. At the end of the plot, actors and audiences will break all the walls, the stage will come to the same setting as the first act.
National Geographic Society
Comprehensive Design
My concept inspired by the fog at the Golden Gate for this project. The Golden Gate Bridge is red, adamant, and strong. However, the fog is translucent, soft, and erratic. The combination of the Golden Gate Bridge and the fog is an amazing miracle. The National Geographic Society uses science and exploration to make people truly understand the natural world and its people, and they call on people to value and protect the earth and the cultures that call it home. The project is located in Presidio, with a perfect view of the ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge. Combining the unique location of the project and the client’s work philosophy, I decided to combine the Golden Gate Bridge and the fog with the interior to become the most attractive highlight of the building.
A Way of Life, Senior Housing
Social Design
This project is a senior living center. The center will provide private condominiums, community activity spaces, a dining facility, and onsite nursing care. The location of this building is at 44 Ouai de la Marne, 19th ARR. Paris, France, which is a flagship for urban regeneration. However, it has a quiet neighborhood and beautiful scenery, the building is facing Canal de l’Ourcq where is a part of the Parisian canal network.
My inspiration came from the theory of a French philosopher. Pierre Hadot believes that Philosophy is a way of life. Philosophy as a way of life is considered an art of living. If we live a simple life, restrict our desires, free ourselves from the fear of death, and learn to accept our mortal condition, we can have a tranquil life, and recover the simple joy of existing, with a feeling of profound gratitude for life. In this project, I will provide customers with a decent quality of life and a pleasant way of communication. I hope that they can experience their own philosophy of life.
Other Works
An Encounter with Van Gogh
Van Gogh was full of misfortune, loneliness, and poverty in his life, and suffered from illness for half of his life. I use materials and a variety of circulations in this project to introduce Van Gogh’s rough life. In the exhibition area, visitors will not only appreciate his paintings, but also experience Van Gogh’s lifelong persistence, pain, hesitation, and collapse like a hundred holes through the heart. Moreover, This museum is located near the most developed commercial center in Shanghai. The exterior is an old Shanghai building, the interior is in the sharp contrast between the extremely simple and modern design. As an experiential museum, this will give visitors a completely different feeling.
Photography
One of my hobbies is taking photos. Photography and interior design have similarities in my perspective. Great art works are inseparable from lines, colors, light, and shadow.
Sketching
I have never stopped contacting sketches, even though most of the work can be done by software.
